Security has been beefed up at the University of Lagos following a violent clash between two rival cult groups on Monday that left two students dead.

Over four police patrol vans have been deployed to maintain round-the-clock-surveillance on the campus following rumours of possible reprisal attack from rival cult groups.
The Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Olukayode Amund has drafted in more policemen from Sabo police station to avert further crisis.

Although the dean declined to reveal identity of the victims of the clash, it was gathered that the slain student was an extra final year of Science and Technology Education, while the other was a 300-level student of Surveying and Geoinfomatics.

UTME/JAMB 2011

JAMB UTME e-registration portal is at www.jamb.org.ng/Unifiedtme/Default.aspx. To access the JAMB UTME portal for e-registration, you need a scratch card sold for N4,600 at leading banks, Post offices and JAMB offices through out Nigeria. The JAMB UTME Scratch card contains a serial number and your PIN, two vital information you require for your UTME e-registration. UTME 2011 registration will also require a finger print scanner.
Example is shown below:

JAMB has introduced a new process for 2011 UTME registration. UTME 2011 registration requires a biometric scanner. The biometric scanner (finger print reader) will be used to capture the left and right thumbs of the candidates. Candidates are advised to make sure a finger print reader is available on the computer they intend using for their JAMB UTME 2011 registration as their finger print (left and right thumb) will be read before they can sign-up for a UTME account, which is the first step in the registration process.

Another new requirement for registering for JAMB UTME 2011 is that the computer you use for your registration must have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed. This is because the application that runs the Jamb UTME 2011 registration portal is based on Java programming language. Minimum of JRE 1.6 is required. Java JRE can be downloaded free on the internet, if it is not already on your system (about 10MB).

Make sure to read the instructions at the registration website before commencing your registration. The JAMB UTME 2011 Brochure is built-into the portal making it easy to search for details of your Jamb UTME courses of choice.

How to register for utme 2011

Once you buy your JAMB UTME scratch card, the next thing to do is to visit the JAMB UTME 2011 e-registration portal. The UTME 2011 registration portal is at www.jamb.org.ng/Unifiedtme/Default.aspx. Make sure a finger print reader is available on the computer before commencing registration.

If you are an absolutely new user (i.e. you have not signed up a JAMB UTME 2011 account), use the Sign Up module with the Sign Up (New Users) heading.
Look up the serial number and PIN on your JAMB UTME 2011 scratch card and enter them in the appropriate field in the Sign Up Module. If you registered for JAMB UTME 2010 (last year), the JAMB UTME portal will automatically fetch some of your registration details for JAMB UTME 2010 if you fill-in the UTME 2010 Reg No. (if available field) field. If validation of your JAMB UTME scratch card PIN is successful, you will then be required to scan your left and right thumbs.

Once that is complete you can then proceed to creating your UTME 2011 account. You will create a username and password for logging in to the JAMB UTME 2011 portal. These username and password will be used for subsequent visits to the portal. If your username is not unique, you will be required to choose another one.

Once your JAMB UTME 2011 account is created, the registration page will load for you to commence your UTME 2011 registration. At this point, you can either logout or continue your registration. If you choose to log-out, you can continue your JAMB UTME registration by logging in with the username and password you created in the sign up process. This time you use the Log in Module. Note that subsequent visits to the JAMB UTME portal will no-longer require a fingerprint scanner, but JRE will still be required on the computer.

Before registering for JAMB UTME 2011, make sure you have your information ready. It is advisable to download the JAMB UTME 2011 form template, print a hard copy and fill, then go online and fill the online UTME registration form. Make sure to go through the online brochure at the portal to be sure you enter the right UTME subjects for your chosen course. You should also have an electronic copy of your passport sized photo ready on your computer or flash drive. An electronic copy of your passport can be made through a scanner. You can also capture directly with a digital camera.

Make sure the photo is recent, clear, and of the right size and not more than 15 kiobyte. Test the validity of your passport using the facility provided in the JAMB UTME portal. If your passport is flagged, re-size it using Microsoft photo editor. Note that the picture must also be in jpeg format.

After completing your UTME 2011 registration form, click on submit to complete the registration. Note that once you click submit, your data will be sent to JAMB and at this point you will no longer be able to edit it. You will then be issued a JAMB UTME registration number and examination number, make sure you memorise this number or at least write it down somewhere. You can print your UTME Slip. The UTME Slip can be printed at anytime, just login to print.

LASU STRIKE
LASU Strike: Students announce own resumption date.
Students of the Lagos State University (LASU) have fixed January 5, 2011 as their own resumption date. Mr Agboola Seriki, Public Relations Officer of the institution’s Students Union, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on Sunday. NAN reported on Sunday that the students took the action even as the institution’s striking lecturers and the state government were yet to agree on terms to end the over three month strike embarked upon by the lecturers.

Seriki said the union had informed all students of the institution of the resumption date and had received assurances that they would converge on campus on the announced date.
``We have resorted to announcing our own resumption date owing to the failure of the state government and the striking lecturers to agree on terms to end the crisis.
``For over three months that the strike has endured, it is the students that have been at the
receiving end.
``We cannot continue to remain at home and waste away; that is why we are resuming on our own even without any formal statement from the school authorities,’’ he said. On what the students would be doing when they resume without the lecturers in class, Seriki said the students would rather keep that a secret.
``Well, we are the students and when we say we want to resume, I think the university is resuming too.”

“The guy was bleeding through his nose and right temple; his right eye and lips were swollen. Even while he was down and unconscious, the guy kept kicking him with his boots; the beating was just too much,” said Ime Etim, a final year student of the University of Lagos, describing the assault that almost resulted in the death of Jide Pinheiro, a post-graduate student of the institution.

However, the extent of damage to Mr. Pinheiro who has been in the hospital for over three weeks remains unclear. His right eye is swollen and he has trouble forming images. The result of the CT scan carried out on him has not been disclosed to him, he said, and he could only guess why.

The attack occurred on the evening of October 30 this year, near the car park of Mariere Hall. Eyewitnesses initially thought Mr. Pinheiro had died after he fell unconscious. “I was shaking where I was standing,” added Mr. Etim.

Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University yesterday held Awka, the Anambra State capital, hostage as they protest the arrest, detention and manhandling of about 20 of their colleagues including the Students’ Union Government President, Comrade Nelson Omenugha.
The SUG president was said to have been detained at the Central Police Station (CPS), Awka with some other students when they went to secure the release of some of their students that were arrested Thursday’s night on their way home from a popular club house in Awka.

Between the hours of 11a.m. and 2.30p.m, the students, numbering over 200 barricaded the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, at Aroma Junction, Awka and made human and vehicular movements impossible.

Speaking to newsmen, the SUG Secretary, Comrade Okonkwo Israel, said that their president and students were manhandled and beaten up by the police and were still being held, hence their protest and demand for their immediate release.
He said: “Some of our students were beaten up yesterday and from what I gathered when we came to rescue them, we were manhandled and that is why we are protesting to ensure that they are released from the Central Police Station (CPS) Awka.”

Corroborating him, a student who said he witnessed what happened, Emmanuel Nwaibe, said: “We went there with the SUG president and as we were there one policeman pushed our president and slapped him and when we demanded for the release of our students, they started beating all of us.
“They dragged everybody into the cell and collected their GSM phones at the CPS Awka. They even locked up one of our security chief and we are not happy, our students’ union president is in the police custody now. Since then they have continued to beat them, especially our president.”

Also speaking, the SUG Director of Sport, Comrade Okorie Ikechukwu noted: “I was there when it happened; we entered there at CPS and the gate was locked and the SARS men started beating everybody, calling us kidnappers, between 15 and 20 students have been arrested so far and they have been dealing with them.”
The alleged police brutality was also extended to a female journalist with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Miss Joy Mbachi, who was said to have been attacked on getting to the police station to inquire what was happening.
