— Nigerian Muslims are expected today to join their counterparts across the world to begin the Muslim fast of Ramadan, provided the moon is sighted. It’s one of the five pillars of Islam.
Already, there are expectations that the fasting will begin today as the preceding Islamic month, Sha’aban, had reached 29 yesterday, raising the aspiration that the new moon of Ramadan would appear, to signal the beginning of Ramadan fast.
Before now, Secretary, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Dr. AbdulLateef Adegbite on behalf of the council called on Muslims to notify some notable Islamic leaders whenever the new moon of Ramadan is sighted from any part of the country, following which the President of the council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed S’ad Abubakar will make formal pronouncement for the beginning of the fasting.
It noted that in the event of the moon not being sighted on Tuesday, the Tarawih prayers shall be observed today with Ramadan fast commencing the following day, that is Thursday 12th, August, 2010.
