Nigeria's new President,Jonathan Goodluck, has chosen his candidate for vice-president. Goodluck was fomerly the vice-president but with the death of the late president Umaru Yar’Adua, Jonathan became the president and gets the chance to chose who his vice president will be. Jonathan is a Christian southerner and thus people stated that it would be proper for him to choose a vice president who is Muslim and a northerner to further unite their country and to bring balance in the top office.
Regional media reported that president Jonathan had tapped Kaduna State governor Namadi Sambo to serve as vice president after meeting Wednesday with Nigeria’s governor at the president’s villa in Abuja. Mr Nabadi Sambo’s nomination is expected to be forwarded to the Nigerian parliament Thursday for approval. Sambo, an architect, had worked in both the public and private sector in Nigeria and had helped to develop agriculture in Kaduna as well as to improve the water and electricity infrastructure in the region. He had been elected as governor of Kaduna state in 2007 as the candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. He was a Commissioner for five years in the 1980s and early 1990s.
The ruling People’s Democratic Party traditionally rotates the presidency between the mainly Christian south and the mainly Muslim north thus the vice president chosen must typically be of opposite background to the president.
