GENEVA — NIGERIA yesterday moved a step closer towards attainment of targets of the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, by retaining its seat on the 22-member board of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, PMNCH.

Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu appointment on the board to represent the country for the next one year, was a high point of activities of the 63rd World Health Assembly, WHA, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The development puts Nigeria in vantage position to actively contribute to and benefit from the global health community’s efforts to successfully achieve MDGs 4 and 5 which are concerned with infant and maternal mortality respectively.

Vanguard gathered that Chukwu’s appointment on the board is a confirmation of Nigeria’s relevance to the goals of the PMNCH, which has a mission to support the global health community to work successfully towards achieving MDGs 4 and 5 which have to do with reducing the burden of infant and maternal mortality.

The board, includes institutions such as the academic experts in the fields of newborn health, child health, maternal health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, DFID, USAID amongst others.
