Even though there are local aphrodisiacs on sale on the streets of Abuja’s Wuse II, the substances and tablets are mostly imported from far away Asian countries. Weekly Trust investigations reveal that the local sex booster traders have cornered some of Abuja’s strategic locations and their trade pattern is unique. For instance, they roam about in search of customers while operating a kind of shift arrangement.

The daytime aphrodisiac vendors roam around pretending to display mobile telephone recharge cards, which they actually do but with the aphrodisiacs hidden from sight, while the midnight vendors are the most mobile because of the thriving night-life in the area.

The night sellers keep vigil of prospective customers just as the commercial sex workers hang around waiting for clients as well, being service providers for the same target customers.

Investigations revealed that the midday sellers along Ademola Adetokumbo Crecent,Wuse II, tactically approach vehicles as they park, displaying mobile recharge cards and in the lowest tone possible advertise to the unsuspecting clients that: “Oga sir, we get recharge card and the other recharge card too. We also have man power, original one.” But the midnight marauders announce and ask customers openly whether they are interested. ‘Oga, Man power e dey, if you use am, woman go respect you.”’

Unlike the daytime sellers who ply their trade around Wuse II, the major supply routes and places for the night sellers are the major Abuja red light districts, like Area 11 and Zone 4, where commercial sex workers abound.

One of the sellers, Dahiru (not real name), told Weekly Trust that they even sell condoms at those night spots. “You won’t believe it; a lot of people buy them, especially aged married men who engage in extra marital activities. ’’ He further said that they have a good customer base. “We have clients who even call us on phone whenever they are around. Some even send their drivers to buy for them.” Suprisingly, even women do purchase their wares. “After selling genuine recharge card to a certain lady, she suddenly saw one of the packs in my hand and enquired what it was for. I told her, adding that it is meant for men, but to my surprise she bought a sachet. ”

Most of the local sellers prefer the night trade, as they claim it is more lucrative. They also said they do it openly without having to be shy of telling unsuspecting clients what they are selling. In the night, they say most of the people are familiar with the capsules and substances. In that regard, all they have to do is mention the various brands and products available.

Though the night trade is hectic and highly demanding, it pays a great deal and better than the daytime, he said.

A pharmacist based in Abuja, Adams Mangji, said he is aware that such substances from Asia are fast gaining ground in Abuja and other Nigerian markets, but he has reservations on them. “People think you must take a particular drug to serve as an aphrodisiac. It is not necessarily so. You can eat some kind of food that would work as such in your system. For both the native and Asian imported herbal sex performance enhancers, I do not really believe in them because of the uncertainty in the chemical composition, the undiluted and raw nature and its condensed form.”

He also confirmed that the aphrodisiac market and sales is booming in Abuja. Even in regular, registered pharmaceutical stores, a lot of people patronize the drugs he said.

According to Mr. Ona John, 30, married, it doesn’t work. “Some of my colleagues usually patronize them and they once made me give it a trial, but it didn’t work for me.”

Conventional drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are available in big drugstores in the city of Abuja but many people prefer the Asian imported types which are cheaper. A four-tablet pack of Viagra costs 6,000 naira while a handful of the Asian types cost no more than between 500 and 700 naira, depending on the brand. “If you don’t mind the dangerous side-effects, that is,” added Mangji.
