THE National Universities Commission(NUC)on Monday issued a letter of approval to the Kwara State governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for the operation of kwara state university.
This is just as the commission blacklisted five more illegal universities operating in the country in addition to the 36 it had earlier declared illegal. This brings the total number of illegal universities in Nigeria to 41.
Presenting the letter to the governor in a brief ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, warned against proliferation of courses which the school could not manage as that would undermine provision of quality education that the nations was yearning for.
The approval of the university has increased the number of universities in Nigeria to 95. Out of these, 27 are federal, 34 state and 34 private universities.
Okojie, who stressed the commitment of the present government to giving Nigerians access to education, expressed worry
that of about 1.2 million Nigerians that seek admission yearly to universities, only about 250,000 of them get admission, representing 25 per cent of candidates who are offered admission on yearly basis.
