LASU Strike: Students announce own resumption date.
Students of the Lagos State University (LASU) have fixed January 5, 2011 as their own resumption date. Mr Agboola Seriki, Public Relations Officer of the institution’s Students Union, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on Sunday. NAN reported on Sunday that the students took the action even as the institution’s striking lecturers and the state government were yet to agree on terms to end the over three month strike embarked upon by the lecturers.
Seriki said the union had informed all students of the institution of the resumption date and had received assurances that they would converge on campus on the announced date.
``We have resorted to announcing our own resumption date owing to the failure of the state government and the striking lecturers to agree on terms to end the crisis.
``For over three months that the strike has endured, it is the students that have been at the
receiving end.
``We cannot continue to remain at home and waste away; that is why we are resuming on our own even without any formal statement from the school authorities,’’ he said. On what the students would be doing when they resume without the lecturers in class, Seriki said the students would rather keep that a secret.
``Well, we are the students and when we say we want to resume, I think the university is resuming too.”
